Breaking: WarwickSU unlocking student potential - we don't need no education...

Finding a gap between reality and perception can sometimes be quite devastating, but then all dreams must end. Though, when it comes to WarwickSU, this is hardly a first.

In the latest attempt to attaining their vision of 'unlocking [every students'] potential' through 'representation' and 'loads of opportunities to participate in debate', the SU finds itself a bit lacking...

Warwick SU's vision - perhaps a visit to Specsavers soon-ish?

Last week, Student Council debated a number of SU policy motions, including a proposal to establish a reading list for elected officers from Karl Marx's Das Kapital to Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. Council decided to rejected this, perhaps we don't need no education...

The point is less the ludicrousness of the motion or that Council voted against doing more reading, but, in fact, no students knew about it.

All members of the SU (i.e. all students) are guaranteed rights to attend and participate at Student Council (By-Law 1.4.1.e) - however, not a single email was sent to student informing them of this term's Student Council.

Perhaps the SU should reevaluate how it encourages students to participate in its decision making processes.

In line with the SU's commitment to student engagement, it sent an email today at 7.30pm (05 Feb 2017) telling students that this term's ASM 'takes place tonight at 5pm'!

Thanks for the email, WarwickSU!

The once-a-term All-Student Meeting (ASM) is where SU proposals/motions are debated by all students present, and also where students can ask Officers questions about their work - arguably an important event, best promoted two and a half hours before it starts, rather than after.

We will never know whether the reading list for the SU includes Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but we do know that the SU's commitment to widening student participation is probably unparalleled in this regard...
