Breaking: Warwick SU motion delays BREXIT by a year!

Warwick SU silly season has officially begun... At the current termly-ASM (Student Referenda), students are converging to vote on the policy proposal, Warwick SU - Let’s Support Leaving the EU- Repeal Policy 083.

The second line of the policy, notes, "On the 23rd June 2017, the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union"!

Nothing quite like voting on a vote that never happened... or re-writing political history!

Warwick SU motion, noting a imaginary vote

Despite strong arguments for and against the motion voiced at both Student Council, and the All-Student Meeting, and a flawless vetting process for motions, SU staff and student officers failed to spell-check the second line of the pro-Brexit motion going to referendum for all 24,000 students...

At present, a convoluted vetting process reviews all student policy proposals.

For this motion, it went through Impact Assessment, Democracy Exec Steering, and Student Council amendments. At each of these processes, an array of eminent individuals took part in reviewing this, from the President of the SU, all the Sabbatical Officers, the Chair of the Student Council, the SU Returning Officers, to experienced SU Democracy Office staff, as well as members of Warwick Politics Society... and even Boar reporters writing about it!

Aren't we glad that our student ideas are so well scrutinised!?

The Union is now in curious situation of either voting in recognition of a vote to leave the EU that didn't happen, or voting against supporting a vote that didn't happen?

The Eye will be in touch to see whether the motion proposers intend to amend or withdraw the motion in due course...

Otherwise, happy voting everyone!
