Irony Reigns: Site of Anti-Capitalist Occupational Protest rented to host Anti-Capitalist Labour Leader

Jeremy Corbyn visited the University of Warwick yesterday, 14th October 2017 - speaking at the Young Labour Conference 2017. #YL17

Such occurences to university campuses are quite common and trivial, but this time there was a large amount of irony about the event.

The Conference was held at the Slate - Warwick's 'brand new £5.3 million facility'.

For those who follow the activities of the far-left WFFE protest group: in December 2016, the group - of about 100 students - occupied the Slate for 3 weeks without permisson, in protest against the University of Warwick. In fact, students with part time jobs at the Slate lost their salaries due to the protest.

WFFE stayed until their demands were meet. This included demanding 'the University to opt out of the Teaching Excellence Framework', agree to Warwick Anti-Casualisation's 6 Demands, and to scrap the protest injunction on campus. Details can be found, here. After 3 weeks, a compromise between the protestors and the University was agreed, culminating with a public statement from the Vice Chancellor, Stuart Croft to students.

Eloise Millard, from the Boar reported from the inside, 'meet[ing] the people in the occupation' -  wrote that the multi-million pound 'Slate building itself is a representation of some of the issues of the Higher Education Bill, such as the marketisation of higher education and the capitalist university'.

The official Facebook Event hosted by WFFE, was unsurprisingly shared 'in solidarity' by the Warwick Marxist Society, calling students 'to join' the occupation.

Evidently, this was recently overlooked by Young Labour students and Jeremy Corbyn, who rented out the Slate for their 2017 Conference.

The Eye wonders what Jeremy's shadow Chancellor and self-confessed Marxist, John McDonnell would have said about Young Labour paying for the space and financing this capitalist university - considering that comrades had previous occupied it for free!

The Boar article had described the 'state of the art, shiny' building, telling students 'it is also not for us'.

Evidently, it turns out that the space was for Young Labour students attending the Conference!
